David Duane Jaynes (born December 12, 1952 in Kansas City, Kansas) is a former American football quarterback raised in Bonner Springs, Kansas. He was All-American for the University of Kansas in 1973.During the early 1970s, Jaynes broke virtually every passing record in KU history. When he left KU, he was No. 1 in passing, with 5,132 yards (later broken by Frank Seurer). Jaynes held the record for most career passing touchdowns, with 35, but was subsequently passed by Todd Reesing who had 90 career touchdowns. His most memorable game was in 1973 against Tennessee, when he completed 35 of 58 attempted passes for 394 yards. In 1973 KU finished 7-4-1 and went to the Liberty Bowl. Jaynes finished fourth in the voting that year for the Heisman Trophy.Jaynes was drafted in the third round (66th overall) of the 1974 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs with whom he played two games that season. He was also the first player selected in the inaugural World Football League by the Houston Texans, but never signed with them.In 2001, he married Cary Grant's widow, Barbara Harris.
