Alastair James Stewart OBE (born 22 June 1952) is a British journalist and newscaster. Stewart is employed by ITN where he is a main newscaster for ITV News. He also presented Police Camera Action! but had to give this up after being convicted of drink driving. He is a Patron of the charity Kids for Kids - helping children in Darfur and disability charity Scope. Alastair joined Southern Television in 1976 then joined ITN in 1980 in which he served 3 years with Channel 4 News and remains a main newsreader with ITV News after 31 years, making him the longest serving male newsreader on British television having worked in both the local news, and the national news for the past 38 years.
During Coronation Street (1960)'s 50th anniversary in December 2010, Stewart featured on ITV News (1955) 'bulletins' depicting the tram disaster throughout that week.

He was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2006 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to broadcasting and charity.

Stewart quit ITN in 1992, after Trevor McDonald replaced Alastair Burnet as main News at Ten (1967) anchor, and after dual presentation was stopped by ITN. In the running was Stewart, McDonald, and Julia Somerville. He joined London News Network - the successor to 'Thames News' - as male anchor for London Tonight (1993) from 1993 to 2009, where he then switched to presenting 'ITV News at 6:30'.

Is one of an elite group who has presented all of ITN's bulletins - except for 5 News (1998) - and during his time at ITN, he has become a household name over the past 20 years.

He joined ITN in 1980, after four years as a newsreader and reporter for ITV's Southern Television [now defunct].

Stewart rejoined ITN part-time to become the Overnight Voice of the ITV News Channel, alongside Angela Rippon, in 2003, to cover the Iraq War. Nowadays, he fronts a weekday news show "Live with Alastair Stewart", on the 24 hour ITV News Channel.
